How we build this list
- Business licenses. Every business operating in the city needs a city license before it opens, the city says. The city does not publish a list of new licenses; established businesses can be looked up through the Charleston County license portal.
- Ribbon cuttings and announcements from the businesses themselves, the city and Charleston County.
- State filings. New companies register with the South Carolina Secretary of State; a filing alone does not mean a business has opened, so we list a business only when it opens or announces a date.
We do not list a business on the strength of a social media post or another outlet’s report.
Opening a business here?
New businesses need a city business license before operating, and businesses in commercial buildings need a fire inspection first. Our building permits and zoning guide covers permits and the zoning verification letter. Food businesses are inspected by the state; see our restaurant inspections guide.
What this means for you
- Outlet shoppers have a new place to eat at Tanger.
- If you use the Rivers Avenue Chick-fil-A, check its page before you go.
- Tell us what’s opening on your street.
